The Stanley Cup has made several recent visits to Grand Forks courtesy of former UND players. Ed Belfour brought it to Hyslop Sports Center after he won the trophy with the Dallas Stars in 1999. Mike Commodore brought it all over town—the old Ralph Engelstad Arena, the new one, Walsh Hall, Frank White's sociology class and Judy's Tavern—after he won it in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes. Matt Greene brought it to the Manvel Legion, Darcy's Cafe, the Red Pepper and Judy's Tavern after he won it with the Los Angeles Kings in 2014.
The Stanley Cup also recently made a trip to Roseau County when Dustin Byfuglien brought it to his hometown of Roseau after winning it with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010. Oshie has been closely tied to this area since moving from Washington state to Warroad in 2002 as a high school sophomore. He helped the Warriors to a pair of Minnesota Class A state titles before moving on to a three-year career at UND.
He helped UND get to the NCAA Frozen Four in all three of his collegiate seasons. Oshie frequently returns to the area in the offseason and even started a Warroad clothing line this season. A year ago, when the Capitals were in Winnipeg for a regular-season game against the Jets, Oshie and Taylor Chorney rented a car and drove to Grand Forks to drop in on a UND practice.
This season, Oshie and Chorney—Capitals teammates until Chorney was traded in late February—were in Denver to play the Avalanche the same weekend that UND was in town to play the Pioneers. They got together with the UND coaching staff the night before their games.
